Fjord & Wildlife Cruise
Experience the fjord on a private cruise together with Roy, our inimitable local captain. As you glide past the only glacier in mainland Europe to calve directly down into the ocean, he will enliven your voyage with seaman’s tales told with timeless warmth and wit. You will sail out through the mouth of the fjord to discover its bird and animal life, including the chance to see majestic whales up close from end October to mid January. Afterward, step onto the dock of the tiny island of Spildra, home to 19 hardy souls – including Roy – and Norway’s smallest registered pub. There’s nothing like the fresh fjord air to stir up an appetite, and you will be welcomed to a set table by the captain’s wife to enjoy a meal of homemade local delicacies.
During the winter months, the cruise is usually undertaken in the captain’s working boat, Kameleon. Kameleon is a rustic boat in the traditional style, with a seaman’s interior and a protected outdoor deck. Having once served as a ferry, its robust prow slices effortlessly through the icy water, allowing you to sail closer to the glacier than you could with a lighter craft. Thanks to its enhanced stability in the water, Kameleon is regularly chartered for diving and photography expeditions, and has even been used by National Geographic. During the summer, this excursion is best enjoyed by cabin cruiser.
From March to October, Arctic Floating can be added to the Fjord & Wildlife Cruise for an additional cost.
